Would allowing the dog on the bed but not at night send mixed messages?

Here`s another great article:

We are in the process of adopting a dog, and are hoping to get a lovely 50lb lab hound mix (fingers crossed). We were going over house rules and we are fine with having a dog that goes on the couch or on the bed, we can live with some paw prints. However, two adults and two cats with a 50lb dog seems a bit much on a queen bed. Would allowing the dog on the bed but having him spend the night in a crate or in his own bed be confusing? Would the fact that everyone sleeps together but he doesn't be confusing?
