Transitioning out of Crate Training?

Here`s another great article:

First time dog owner with a 16month old Golden Retriever and I have a question about transition out of his crate.

Since we brought him home, he has been sleeping in his crate downstairs at night and it has been very successful.

When we run errands, we have a pen that is connected to his crate and blocks part of the room, giving him space to move around.

I had heard people crate train for up to two years (night time sleeping). Anyways, I was thinking about opening up his night time sleeping to let him have the crate a and Pen, the same setup we do when we are out of the house.

Anyone have tips/advice how you transitioned out of night time crate sleeping, and what age?

Thanks!
