Here`s another great article:
I got a 5 year old rescue maltipug about 6 months ago. He is neutered. He is generally a very good boy but on walks, he marks OFTEN (at least once a minute for the first 10 mins or so then maybe once every 2-3 mins after that). He is prone to UTIs but his frequent marking is an every day occurrence and he doesn’t have a UTI every day so I’m just wondering if there are any tricks to maybe help me help him not mark so much. He has marked in other people’s homes too especially on first visits.
The other thing I am looking for tips on is his reactive behavior on walks. He lunges and barks at most anything that passes by but has a particularly bad reaction to joggers, bikers, and larger trucks. I have trained him with treats (he turns around and looks at me and knows he will get a treat when I say “Griffin, Look”) so I try to use the treats to distract him but it only works about 15% of the time. The other 85% he goes wild anyway. He doesn’t seem interested in the treats when we are on walks and is generally not a food-driven boi. Once the trigger is out of sight he is quick to calm down and walk like normal.
I just want to be able to take him to parks without him almost knocking down bikers and runners (he looks so cute and is quiet until they get right near him and then he explodes). Help!
