Playpen and crate overnight?

Here`s another great article:

It is my puppy’s (9 week old miniature schnauzer) second night with us tonight. The first night he slept in his crate and he didn’t fully settle, he howled a wee bit. We got up to take him wee a few times but he didn’t seem to go toilet when we took him out. However every time we put him back in the crate he would start his howling and crying process all over. We are thinking of trying a new option. Put the crate (with door open) in his playpen with wee pads down. With this option is it okay to let him wee on the pads instead of taking him out during the night and disturbing him and potentially starting the howling etc once we put him back ?
