Here`s another great article:
My dog has always shown aggression issues. My husband and I got him from a no kill shelter, and since the dog had issues he had been in the shelter for over 6 months before he met us and we took him in.
Managing his aggression was manageable, but we really struggled to solve the issue in it’s entirety. At home he bonded with my husband really well (one-owner dog type), and I loved my dog regardless.
Fast forward 6-7 years and I got pregnant. While 9 months pregnant he attacked a mailman when I opened the door, and I was BARELY able to stop him from biting them. This was the first time I realized I couldn’t control his aggression.
After my baby was born he turned his aggression towards my baby as if she was a rodent.
Having had a c-section, I couldn’t physically control my dog to keep him away from my baby, so I had to hide out in my bedroom with my daughter, away from the dog. I had to be on bed rest but dealing with postpartum issues while feeling scared to leave my room… was really traumatizing at the time. All the love I had for my dog was gone after that.
My daughter is 10 months old now and I’m pregnant with number two, but my dislike for my dog has turned into me despising him. Sometimes I even clench my teeth and have feelings of rage when I see him. I never knew I could have so much hate in my heart, particularly regarding a dog I used to love and defend.
Clearly I have to change something. If he becomes aggressive towards my second baby I’m scared I will want to surrender him. That will destroy my husband and it’s not fair to my dog.
I don’t know how to fix this. What do I do to rebuild this relationship with my dog and defend my babies before someone gets hurt?
