How much of a walk should be spent walking?

Here`s another great article:

Our 3 month old Australian Shepherd puppy loves going on walks. He's generally very well behaved, walks next to us, doesn't pull on the leash.. untill he sees a squirrel. Or an interesting leaf. Or a tree that needs to be sniffed. Sometimes we let him in investigate and explore, other times we interrupt and continue on with the walk.

My question is, how disciplined should we be about continuously walking? We want our puppy to be able to enjoy walks without getting bored, but it can be a pain to have to stop every ten feet some days. Any suggestions on good walking to exploring ratios?
