Potty training without a bell?

Here`s another great article:

My 17 week old puppy has always been pretty good about not having too many accidents and will potty on command fairly reliably. She doesn’t know how to let us know she needs to go, though, so typically we just take her out after it’s been awhile. Yesterday she had her first accident in a while and in hindsight I can see how I missed her signals, but it’s also easy to mistake them for other puppy behaviors.

I’m looking for tips that don’t include a potty bell. I have nothing against this method other than my family dog growing up learned Bell=attention. Has anyone had any success with another way?
