Here`s another great article:
I have a 4 year old neutered lab/pit mix. We have had him for 2 years. Previous to us he lived with the same family from the time he was 8 weeks old. We also have a 6 year old female pit.
When we first got him we were able to take him to the dog park and he would occasionally find a female dog and hump her. It was embarrassing but he showed no aggression. After about a year we were out for a hike one day and when we passed another dog he went absolutely nuts in a very aggressive manor. He was properly harnessed and never made contact with the dog. Still I was mortified that he had reacted like that. After that my mother in law started bringing her dogs over for visits. He would act a little funny at first but soon would be in the backyard playing without issue. Still when we are out hiking he shows aggression towards other dogs. Because of this we have started taking him to less populated places to hike and we avoid taking him into town where he could encounter another dog in a sidewalk situation. Still he has NEVER shown aggression towards a human.
He has never enjoyed people walking past our house on the street. It doesn’t matter if they have a dog with them or not. He goes absolutely nuts. Yesterday my son and his friend (12 years old) were outside playing. My son came in to ask me a question and I told him to hang on one second. Before I could get to the door my dog had pushed past him and ran outside. He does this sometimes and will pee in the front yard and run right back in. Well yesterday my son’s friend, who has been in our home MANY TIMES, was on the porch. My dog barked in an aggressive way and immediately lunged at him. Nipping him in the leg but hard enough to break the skin. My son grabbed his collar and he turned around and went right back inside. I went outside and took the kid home. Apologized profusely to his mom and generally just freaked out. Thankfully his mom was oddly okay and didn’t think my dog was some kind of monster. When I returned to the house he was standing on the far side of the house with his tail between his legs.
I’m at a loss. I don’t know why he did it but obviously I want to fix it. He is a good dog who obviously needs some correction. My mother suggested a muzzle and socializing him more but even with a muzzle I don’t want strangers to be scared when my dog is going crazy.
Any idea what’s going on with him or tips on what I need to do to make sure this doesn’t happen again? The little boy he bit came back over later. I am the one that let him in the door while my partner held the dog on a leash. As soon as the boy was in the door the dog’s tail was wagging and he was ready to play with him!
Thanks in advance for any responses.
