Loose leash walking or heel?

Here`s another great article:

Hey all—

I’ve been walking my dog a lot, 2-3 times/day. He’s an 8month old German Shepherd. I only got him a month or so ago and I was so focused on training I ignored what he’d do on walks because he never pulled to hard (other than distractions like people and dogs where he goes bite, but we’ve been doing threshold training, maybe it’ll help). Anyways, he’s still learning heel but he’s getting closer, but it also seems relatively similar to loose leash walking. So which do people like to do? Heel with sniff breaks? Or loose leash and he can sniff so long as he’s staying by my side? If loose leash, do you use a command word? And how do you get him to switch from left side to right and stay on that side? Thanks.
