I use the “Ouch!” trick when my puppy is biting people. But what do I do to stop him from biting pillows, shoes, etc.?

So far, the only thing that seems to work is clapping loudly close to his head. But this feels wrong. It scares the crap out of him, and doesn’t that have essentially the same effect as hitting him would? It just makes him fear me more.. right?

If so, what should I do instead? I try giving a firm “Ah, ah, ah!” or a firm “No!” Those don’t work super well.
