Here`s another great article:
We have a beagle mix and he is 3 months old. He learns things fast and is potty trained BUT I can't train him at all with treats. He goes absolutely bananas with any type of treat. Feeding him doesn't affect it, he still goes nuts and loses his focus if I try to reward him with treats. The quality of the treat doesn't matter either.
He is a very smart puppy compared to all dogs I've had before but how can I get him to calm down to make rewarding him easier? So far I've rewarded him by telling him he is a good boy and I've pet him a lot afterwards. He gets excited but still keeps his focus on me. This is the only way I can train him and it's not as effective outside when he is on a leash.
He knows how to sit, lie down, roll over, shake, high five, paws up, fetch, let go, come here (off leash too), stay and put all his toys in a basket. So should I just keep training him without treats or is there a way to get him to calm down?
