How do you work on a dog that runs away.

Here`s another great article:

my dog has a dog door with a nice backyard but if the front door is left open he is off. And if you try to go to him he will run like it's a game and if you call him he will ignore you same with if you try to give him a treat or anything else.

The hard part is how do you try to train this out of him. Maybe you can't but when he comes home you can't punish him because I think he will associate coming home with being punished. but can you reward him, or will he think that he's being rewarded for running away and not the coming back part.

Luckily this only happens like once a month but still.
