Heart worm Preventatives: necessary or no?

Here`s another great article:

Our pup is now over 1 year old and a happy healthy girl. We have been told by our vet that she should continue to get a monthly heart worm preventative (she was officially tested for heart worm at her annual appointment and was negative), but is this completely necessary? I only ask because we both had dogs growing up and none of them had monthly heart worm medication like this. We are fine doing it if it actually is needed, but if it’s one of those things where it’s really not but vets still want it, then we might not!….opinions?
