Here`s another great article:
Hello. Our new puppy is growling at us on occasion when we pick her up, pet her when she wants to play, or remove her from an area she wants to be in. The thing I'm unclear about is whether we should stop doing what we're doing when she growls or keep doing it? I'm worried that of we put her down when she growls she will learn that growling and nipping works and that she gets to decide whens she's picked up and when she's not. But also I don't want her to associate being held by us with negative emotions. We've been holding her when she's calm and giving treats and stuff, and she's usually fine with being held, but a couple times a day when she doesn't want it she'll turn into a little demon. Any help?
