Food aggression with pig ears only?

Here`s another great article:

So I gave my 6 month old pointer mix a pig ear and that was an unexpected mistake. He became very possessive of it and growled at our dachshund mix like he had never done before. We used a long dog toy to sort of poke at it while he was chewing it and he snapped at the toy.

After that we took it away and he was normal again and acted like nothing ever happened. Are pig ears that good that a dog who has zero aggression would flip out like this? He doesn't act like this about anything else that we have introduced to him.

Can this be trained out? I just tossed the one he ate and the rest of the bag because I don't want to deal with it.
