Here`s another great article:
Hello! I have a 5 year old rescued, neutered Frenchie mix who is a great dog, generally friendly and happy…until he’s on a leash.
It’s like Jekyll and Hyde. When he meets another dog off leash, he’s a little tense until they do the whole sniffing crotches thing, then he’s fine and he plays with them. The only time he ever got aggressive was once when he snapped at my friend’s dog, who kept pestering him to play when he was done. But when we come across a dog when he’s on the leash, he turns into a snarling, lunging, barking, out of control monster.
I’ve tried having friends stand at the end of a field with their dogs and moving him closer gradually, but the second he spots the dog, no matter how far away we are, he tenses up and growls. I’ve taught him “watch me” and try to get him to do that before he starts, but I might as well be talking to a brick wall. As soon as he realizes another dog is there, there is no getting his attention back on me.
Recently, I’ve given up and am just trying to walk him when there aren’t as many people out. There are a couple of places near me that do training classes, but none of them fit my schedule.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
