Here`s another great article:
6 year old mutt, have had her since she was a pup, and my family and I raised her along with another dog we already had. She and the other dog would play when we weren't paying them any attention, also we never crated her and had a huge yard they would play in for most of the day.
6 months ago, I moved out of the city, and brought her with me. She's never been without the other dog or 2 other members of my family, so she seems to have grown an insane amount of attachment to me. She literally will stare at me ALL day, if I'm on the computer and turn around at any time she's just laying down staring at me, she doesn't ever leave my room to go walk around the house or do her own thing ever.
1: The Crate
Whenever I leave the house she starts barking, scratches the door, and whenever I get back she barks and essentially screams for about 5 minutes (I totally ignore her until she stops). She has a doggie bed I got her very accustomed to, and then I put it inside of a crate about 2 months ago. Things were going well, she would wander into it occasionally, and just generally started to get more comfortable. Then, about 3 weeks ago, I had to leave the apartment for 9 hours, and not wanting my doors to get absolutely destroyed while I was gone I locked her in the crate. Big mistake, she won't even get close to it since that happened. I can throw treats in but she'll just grab them when I'm not in the room, and then instantly run out to eat it somewhere else.
2: The Attention
Another thing I think may be an issue is that she doesn't ever do anything when I'm not paying attention to her. I feel like she is being deprived stimulation because she literally will just lay around in my room all day unless I'm playing with her or walking her. She has never played with toys, despite trying to get her to even as a pup, and generally just has a lack of interest in anything that isn't me. I don't even know if this is actually an issue or not, but I feel bad for her because it's just impossible for me to not do anything aside from play with or walk my dog all day lol.
Should I be super worried about #2? Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to help these problems? I've done a lot of googling and tried lots of random things I've found on the internet but I haven't really asked anyone educated in dog behaviors or other dog owners.
