I've been working with my dog for years. He's perfect on leash, up to a 100-foot line. But the second he realizes he's free (even within the fenced 10 acres where we train), he's gone, just coming back to check in every five minutes or so. He becomes deaf to me.
So should I keep trying or just accept that I've got a fantastic on-leash pooch who happens not to be cut out for joining me off leash in the local national Forest.
Because I would not consider having him off leash outside of fences if I didn't have "total recall."
