Here`s another great article:
I’ll try to keep this short and to the point: My boyfriend and I adopted a 1year old Mexican street dog 2.5 months ago, who is amazing and not aggressive whatsoever towards anyone (including kids) aside from my boyfriends nieces and nephew. He has a niece who is 7, and a niece and nephew (twins) pair who are 4. They live 5 minutes away from his parents and have essentially no experience with animals. We live far enough away that to visit, we need to stay the night, so leaving our dog home isn’t an option. despite countless conversations and demonstrations with the kids about respecting animals, they don’t get it at all, and are constantly harassing my dog, shrieking at her, teasing her, getting so close to her face, and running at/from her. My boyfriend or I always supervise their interactions, and are always there to step in when they’re doing this but it’s literally constant – she’s been resorting to snapping at them, bearing teeth, and other aggressive behaviour. which is COMPLETELY justified, and out of character. I’ve been keeping her on a leash and next to me when they’re around, giving her a lot of designated time when the kids aren’t allowed around her, and taking her for walks just us two to give her a break, yet still, shes snapping at them. I really don’t know what else to do here. I am protective over my dog and can’t stand the way they’re treating her, and continuously explaining to them that if they run screaming right at her face, she’s going to try to bite, is doing nothing. even when the kids aren’t directly bothering her, they are so wildly loud, my dog just seems so stressed being there. All the adults are in agreement on how the kids behaviour is not okay and they all step in. Yet still, the kids are just not getting it/don’t care at all. I really don’t know what to do – coming here is just stressful for me (and my dog!) and I really don’t want it to be that way. Im at a total loss, and am wondering if anyone has any advice.
